Kach Kache, Chad - an unforgettable market day experience that felt as though I had stepped back in time and that every character had been cast in what felt like a Wilfred Thesiger movie. Heat, billowing dust, livestock, turbans and a deep and profound sense of an entirely altered reality to the one that you and I inhabit…so visceral, so simple in its complexity, and so raw and connected to the elemental and primal instincts that enable existence. Very difficult to put in to words, that scene - and difficult to photograph out of respect for religious constraints. Will never forget those moments in time….somewhere, in what felt like the middle of nowhere….in Chad.
And so my Nomad obsession ensues:
In the words of Bruce Chatwin -
‘Gradually the idea for a book began to take shape. It was to be a wildly ambitious and intolerant work, a kind of ‘Anatomy of Restlessness’ that would enlarge on Pascal’s dictum about the man sitting quietly in a room. The argument, roughly, was as follows: that in becoming human, man had acquired, together with his straight legs and striding walk, a migratory ‘drive’ or instinct to walk long distances through the seasons; that this ‘drive’ was inseparable from his central nervous system; and, that, when warped in conditions of settlement, it found outlets in violence, greed, status-seeking or a mania for the new. This would explain why mobile societies such as the gypsies were egalitarian, thing-free and resistant to change; also why, to re-establish the harmony of the First State, all the great teachers - Buddha, Lao-tse, St Francis - had set the perpetual pilgrimage at the heart of their message and told their disciples, literally, to follow The Way.

Archive digging and ‘the restlessness that haunts my soul’. Bruce Chatwin’s remarkable writings and explorations in to this subject informed me from a young age and consequently my global wanderings and travels have always drawn me to wide open spaces where nomads and gypsies and herders who traverse large distances on foot seek greener pastures. It’s a compelling and intriguing notion to imagine that once we all were nomads - perhaps within each one of us there are distant memories of a transient, changing environment and way of life, that is defined by seasons and an instinct to move. We can begin to integrate and understand that the journey really is the destination and that any notion or attachment of permanence to anything is futile…

The Indian Gypsy
In tattered robes that hoard a glittering trace
Of bygone colours, broidered to the knee,
Behold her, daughter of a wandering race,
Tameless, with the bold falcon’s agile grace,
And the lithe tiger’s sinuous majesty.
With frugal skill her simple wants she tends,
She folds her tawny heifers and her sheep
On lonely meadows when the daylight ends,
Ere the quick night upon her flock descends
Like a black panther from the caves of sleep.
Time’s river winds in foaming centuries
Its changing, swift, irrevocable course
To far off and incalculable seas;
